Our Commitment to Building Homes for Disabled Veterans
Our Partnership With Helping a Hero: Building Homes for Veterans
We are proud partners of Helping a Hero, a non-profit that serves our nation’s veterans. Together, we have built 11 homes for veterans. Our most recent project with this partnership completed July 1, just in time for the new homeowner to enjoy the Fourth of July at their new home.
Helping a Hero is a non-profit organization purposed with supporting injured military personnel as they transition back to civilian life and build their futures. The organization, founded in 2006, focuses much of its attention on building homes for veterans. In every home, they ensure each detail is suited to fit the hero’s specific needs.
Helping a Hero has partnered with builders across 22 states to build 100 homes for deserving veterans and their families—and we are proud to have been a part of that network for years.
The most recent home build with this partnership is a 2,520-square-foot home designed for Army veteran CPL (Ret.) Matt Deatherage. He is pictured above with Perry Homes team members Kathy Britton (CEO) and Chris Little (City President) at the groundbreaking ceremony for his home back in February. This four-bedroom, three-bath home in San Antonio will be perfectly tailored to its proud new owner.
CPL Deatherage was wounded in the line of duty during his first deployment overseas in Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010. Since then, he has undergone 37 surgeries including the amputation of both of his legs. As a bilateral amputee, CPL Deatherage relies on the state-of-the-art prosthetics he wears to help him get around. Having a home suited to his needs will help make daily life easier for this hero.
In order to achieve this, we designed a floorplan just for CPL Deatherage, complete with lower countertops, a modified restroom area, wider hallways, and other safety features. Our goal was to create a house that not only feels like home to CPL Deatherage but one in which he can be independent and empowered.
For CPL Deatherage, the strong sense of military community is one of the main reasons he is excited to call Texas home. While American pride runs deep throughout the state, only one city has earned the title of Military City USA®. Home to many active-duty and retired military personnel alike, San Antonio provides its heroes with a tight-knit community dedicated to supporting those who have served their country. CPL Deatherage’s customized home is set in the scenic and amenity-filled Trails at Westpointe community in Northwest San Antonio.
On July 1, CPL Deatherage was presented the keys to his new home.
Perry Homes is proud to be a part of such an amazing partnership and to be able to use our 50+ years of design and building experience to custom build homes for disabled veterans' unique needs. Check out this video to learn more about our partnership with Helping a Hero.
