Preparing for a Hard Freeze

With the cold weather approaching, our team at Perry Homes wants to make sure you and your family are prepared. Deep freezes pose a threat to the integrity of your home, and we are here to give you the information to enjoy a safe and warm winter.

Homeowners can reduce the chance of property damage by preparing your pipes before a hard freeze. Although we only have a few hard freezes during the winter months, it’s still important to protect exposed water pipes. The following suggestions will assist you in accomplishing this task.*

• Turn off sprinkler system. Drain water from the water sprinkler supply lines, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Cover all possible shrubs and flowers to help reduce harmful effect the freeze will have on landscaping.
• Remove and drain all outdoor hoses. Close inside lines supplying outdoor hose bibs.
• If the home will be vacant, shut off the main valve to the house and drain all hose bibs and interior fixtures. Installing hose bib covers helps prevent possible pipe bursts.
• Make sure the main line going into the home is well insulated. If water supply lines are located in the garage, keep the garage door closed.
• If you have an exposed pipe, let cold water drip from the faucet served by the exposed pipe. Running water through the pipe helps prevent pipes from freezing.
• Leave heat on to keep interior of house at a constant temperature.
