Behind the Design with Perry Homes: How to Add Texture
Adding texture to your home brings your interior design plans to life and creates a warm and welcoming space to entertain your guests. Texture in interior design can be any element that adds an extra layer to your design, whether placing a throw pillow on a couch to add a touch of softness or beveling on your walls to increase visual appeal. It's important to be intentional when layering textures in your space to ensure the design comes together seamlessly.
Recently, we sat down with Perry Homes Model Design Team Manager, Tracey Kuch, to gain insights on how her team uses texture in design to bring to life stunning model homes.
Textures in Design, the Details Set the Scene
"When deciding on the interior design of your home, it helps to start with the style and feeling you want to create," says Kuch. Once you've established a goal, you can tailor your design to bring that feeling to life using texture in textiles, artwork, decorative objects, and plants to make your space feel more finished and cohesive."Below are some of the ways the Perry Homes Model Design Team creates thoughtful interior designs to inspire each customer that comes through the door.
A Neutral Base Goes a Long Way
When designing a home, there is a delicate balance between what is trending and what is lasting. Trends are temporary, but great design is timeless. Start with your favorite neutral color palette as a base and layer in a few key design elements. Working with neutral base colors will be much easier as your style evolves.
You can add or refresh your accessories as your home decor style evolves by starting with a neutral color palette and layering a few key home furnishings.
For the Perry Homes Model Design Team, it is about creating a polished and luxurious feel. "To ensure our model home designs are timeless and sophisticated, we like to start with a neutral color palette for wall colors and key pieces of furniture—using shades of white or warm gray." By incorporating textures with neutral tones, you have the most flexibility to customize your interior design and include a wide range of artwork and home furnishings that will blend perfectly.
Choosing the Right Interior Design Textures
Perry Homes' Model Design Team uses a simple formula to choose the textures to include in every model home.
"Across all architectural styles of our models, we want the homes to feel bright, open, and welcoming – texture plays a significant role in creating this environment," Kuch says.It is important to keep things simple when layering textures in your space.
"We generally stick to 2-3 textures when selecting a room's flooring, tile, and backsplash. "Small tweaks to classic materials choices can easily modernize your space." says the Perry Team, "Subway tile is a traditional tile choice. Still, you can elevate the look or emphasis of a design style by changing the overall shape of the tile (going from the typical size of 3"x6" to 4"x 12") or installing it in a pattern. "Metal elements, such as hardware, light fixtures, and even appliances, also play a significant role in the overall tone of your space.
"Metals are another way to vary the texture of a room, typically in a kitchen or bathroom. When selecting metal finishes for your room, consider the room's overall color palette," the Perry Team says, "If you are using warm hues (whites, beiges, and taupes), you should use warm metals like brass, nickel, and copper. Consider cool metals such as chrome and silver if your color palette is cool (blues, greys, and greens)."The Best Places to Infuse Texture in Design
With every space in your home, you can make design choices to reflect your style and how you want guests to feel in your home. The most common rooms texture plays a significant role in creating a mood are the family room and kitchen.
"Most homeowners want the family room, kitchen, and the primary bedroom to exemplify a feeling or a mood," says the Perry Team, "Layering textures is one of the best ways to convey a mood. You can use blankets, artwork, and window treatments to enhance your style."
The more flexibility you afford in your design, the more timeless you can keep your home. Interior design trends will always change, but providing a solid foundation for creativity allows your design aesthetic to evolve.
